Create Unit Tests from System Tests for Cloud System , is it a viable area of investigation?

I want to create Unit Tests from System Tests for testing cloud applications. Most of the cloud applications only unit test for their code , the system test for cloud is left to the cloud providers. System tests may not always lead to maximum coverage. I want to generate unit tests from the system tests(carving) and run them to verify if any bug is present in the cloud response.

I want to understand if the idea is viable that is if such types of unit tests are being done on cloud systems. I have tried searching through GitHub repositories and code and I think the idea has a real chance. But still just want ideas and approaches about it.
