Unit Testing : how important is it

I worked in web application for past 8 years and never wrote Junit for testing java code or another presentation layer unit testing . I able to deliver complex applications , nowadays i see a lot of testing frameworks like mockito and lot of testing frameworks for java-script as well. Are these helpful will it help development ? i always felt they wasted time in development . How important is testing in JavaScript as compared to testing in java .
