Adding Test Target Membership in Xcode

I am trying to incorporate some unit tests into my chat application for learning purposes. I have been following along this tutorial/github demo: http://ift.tt/1yPZjZs

Everything seems to be fine, except for when I add the second target membership check mark in the viewcontroller that links to the test class. Every time I do this in any controller, I get a number of errors and the build fails.
