What is the use of using a compiler in IDE for unit testing?

I'm not understanding how compiler works for unit testing in an IDE. As I'm very new to testing. I need to understand role played by compiler, linker, debugger in an IDE. Can any one suggest a book or website to understand the concept clearly from scratch. Appreciate your support in advance. Please help. Thank you.
